Change in manufacturing
process delivered a change for the good
One of the
world’s largest truck manufacturers asked Chardon to help them
with a dilemma. They were looking to trim costs out of a part assembly
that they’d been happy with for years – an extruded rubber
mud guard with a contoured metal insert.
Immediately, our engineers went to work reviewing the part design, materials
and manufacturing process. And although Chardon is certainly skilled
at extrusion, compression molding this assembly made much more sense.
In short, compression molding allowed us to bond the rubber guard to
the metal insert in-line, therefore, eliminating two secondary operations.
So production time was sped up and a more attractive end-product was
born. Beyond that, the process switch saved $70,000 in tooling and more
than $100,000 in production costs each year.
